Job Purpose

The Senior Electrical and Controls Engineer is a critical leadership role for the OSB Business responsible for supervising and executing electrical engineering efforts across multiple facilities and programs. This position drives continuous improvement in process systems, leads commissioning for mid-cap capital projects, and ensures compliance with functional safety and industry standards. The role requires expertise in power distribution, automation, and process control systems to support complex manufacturing operations with minimal supervision.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with corporate, regional, and plant teams to develop and implement effective solutions that meet facility needs and achieve project goals.
  • Manage resource planning to ensure adequate coverage of engineering disciplines supporting the Corporation’s capital program and manufacturing initiatives.
  • Design automation and process control systems, integrating components such as PLCs (Allen-Bradley and Schneider Electric), AC/DC drives, coordinated drive systems, and position controllers.
  • Perform functional safety reviews and ensure compliance with NFPA, OSHA, IEEE, UL, and other applicable standards.
  • Lead commissioning efforts for mid-cap capital projects, overseeing installation, testing, and seamless handover to operations teams.
  • Develop, configure, and debug PC and PLC communication networks to enable effective data collection and plant-floor information distribution.
  • Create and maintain project documentation, including standards, specifications, schematics, and other materials necessary for achieving defined objectives.
  • Collaborate with the process control team to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities on running production lines, enhancing line efficiencies and equipment reliability.
  • Assist in the development of plant electrical personnel and plant controls engineers by working with corporate resources to assess individual site needs and foster personnel growth.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to internal and external engineering teams, ensuring alignment with project goals, timelines, and corporate standards.
  • Maintain technical proficiency by participating in training, engaging with industry professionals, and attending trade shows and educational opportunities.
  • Lead training efforts for field operations and maintenance personnel, ensuring they understand system design, process operations, and control system functionality.
  • Implement statistical control techniques and programs such as SPC, SQC, and SCADA systems to improve process reliability and performance.
  • Travel moderately to heavily to support projects and initiatives as needed.

What do I need to be successful?

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, with 2–4 years focused on managing electrical engineering efforts for capital improvement projects and 3 years related to process improvement in manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing priorities across multiple locations.
  • A combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position will be considered.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of industrial process systems, including discrete sequential logic, material transfer, fluid pumping, and pneumatic transfer systems.
  • Expertise in Motor Control Centers, AC/DC drives, coordinated drive systems, and position control systems.
  • Proficiency in PC operating systems, networking equipment, and communication protocols.
  • Advanced knowledge of Allen-Bradley and Schneider Electric PLC components and systems, with the ability to apply them effectively in manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in Aveva (formerly Wonderware) HMI software and its application in industrial settings.
  • Familiarity with statistical control techniques and programs, including SPC, SQC, and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and industry standards such as NFPA, FM, IEEE, OSHA, UL, and CSA.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and guide cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary and multi-functional teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience (4–6 years of discipline experience for BS equivalency).

Work Environment

  • This role operates in both office and manufacturing environments, requiring adaptability to both settings.
  • Moderate to heavy travel is required, averaging 50% of the time per month, with the possibility of increased travel during project execution.
  • The position can be home-based, provided the employee resides within two hours of a major airport or within the Southern US region.
