Job Purpose

Provide subject matter expertise and leadership in the identification and evaluation of materials used in manufacturing building products for use in single family, multi-family and light commercial construction.  Including, but not limited to, wood, non-wood, multiple material combinations and adhesives that may be used to assemble these materials into construction products. Testing and validation of these products in application.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the development and commercialization of new building products and systems, with a focus on the integration of non-wood materials in combination with wood composites.
  • Support and lead cross functional project teams; including management of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Research materials and methods to determine their suitability for use in residential & commercial construction products, including working with third party labs and testing agencies.
  • Design, build and test product prototypes to determine fitness for use and installation methodology (e.g. fastener requirements). Including full scale installation on exterior test walls or structures.
  • Identify & test competitive materials for benchmark performance and as candidates for acquisition or licensing.
  • Develop non-standard test methods that provide meaningful performance data to guide decision making, justify commercialization and support marketing claims and product warranties.
  • Assist with the development and documentation required to obtain building code acceptance of LP products.
  • Work effectively with Safety, Engineering, R&D, Marketing & Sales, Environmental, & Manufacturing
  • Work with the Legal team to obtain and protect LP intellectual property.
  • Assist other members of the Technical Team as required
  • Represent LP in professional associations; including active participation on technical committees that develop codes and standards.
  • Assume responsibility for personal safety and for the safety performance of all personnel, projects, and programs.
  • Maintain records according to technology team procedures and corporate records retention guidelines.
  • Develop & manage project budgets and schedules.
  • Perform other duties as necessary

What do I need to be successful?

  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound scientific practices to solve technical problems.
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental design and failure mode analysis.
  • Experience performing standard small sample testing to evaluate physical and mechanical properties.
  • Familiarity with residential and light commercial building codes and practices.
  • Working knowledge of the stage-gate product development process.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
  • Understanding of materials used in the construction of residential and light commercial structures preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of standard business software, including; word processing, data analysis, presentations and project management software (MS Word, Excel, Power Point & Project)
  • Proven technical writing and oral communication (presentation) skills
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and capable of achieving project objectives with little or no supervision.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Material Science or related field of study from an accredited university program; advanced degree desired.
  • Previous experience in a product testing and application development role.
  • Field experience in residential and light commercial construction.


Work Environment:

  • Office, construction site, testing laboratory and manufacturing settings.
  • Moderate to heavy travel; flexible schedule required
