Job Purpose

Seasoned product developer will be responsible for the product development of new products under the direction of the Innovation Manager. The engineer will be accountable for the technical deliverables in Stage Gate process, defining the technical specs and testing requirements, developing formulations and process for the new product, conducting lab trials for prototype development and facilitating plant trials for industrialization. The engineer will also manage the G&I workspace team in conducting NPD testing programs.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Accountable for execution of technical deliverables in the LP Stage Gate NPD process.
  • Manage a team of supervisor and technicians in the G&I workspace / laboratory in conducting internal and external testing programs for new product development.

 

Within the LP Stage Gate NPD process deliverables:

  • Stage 1: Facilitate the scoring of new product ideas and draft the technical feasibility of the NPD project.
  • Stage 2: Perform in depth technical research, validate technology and manufacturability to support the NPD project's authorization -  Assess internal knowledge, external partnership, Intellectual Property (IP), and technical resources required, define preliminary product specs, plant EHS, outline the product development plan.
  • Stage 3: Produce a working prototype (lab scale or full scale) and demonstrate process capabilities of the new product - Develop product design and specification, MSDS, hazard analysis and control plan. Organize and lead trial action teams using internal and external resources. Specify and plan ASTM, ANSI, AWPA and custom tests to demonstrate products will meet requirements.
  • Stage 4: Perform / assist in trial production evaluations, process improvements and plant manufacturing capability Complete product and manufacturing spec, final BOM, SOP, Quality manual, and product literature tech review. Conduct all external third party testing with UL and other certification bodies and obtain ICC ESR if required; Develop manufacturing plans for new products which carry through increasing phases of higher volumes and lower costs. Participate in the selection of manufacturing equipment. 
  • Stage 5: Facilitate the full production run and successful launch of the new product.  Audit manufacturing process for conformity to specifications, support any new competitive product testing, and monitor customer feedback on performance.
  • Stage 6: Review new product post-launch for technical development cost, product conformity to spec, process start up, continued assistance, and patent review.
     
  • Recruit, coach and develop a high-performance team adhering to the values of the organization to “Think And Act Like Owners”
  • Provide technical consultancy to sales, marketing, operations, EHS, engineering, purchasing, finance, and legal on completion of their respective Stage Gate deliverables as and when required.
  • Communicate status of development activities to appropriate parties through Stage updates and Gate reviews at project meetings and senior management presentations.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What do I need to be successful?

Knowledge, Skills and abilities:

  • Proficient in project management, product development and stage gate processes.
  • Knowledge of APA, AWC, CWC, ASTM, ICC, IRC, IBC and other associations.
  • Proven ability to think out of the box in developing new products, analyzing data, and recommending technical solutions.
  • Proven ability to deliver on complex technical projects on time and within budget.
  • Proven experience in leading a technical team
  • Proficient in lab management, CAD and PDM software.
  • Knowledge of the building products and/or wood products industry, equipment and processes.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and develop conclusions and recommendations from that information.
  • Ability to work in teams with many internal and external partners and vendors.
  • Ability to work in a prototyping, laboratory and manufacturing environments.

Experience:

  • 5-10 years combined experience in manufacturing, R&D or related industry.
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Environment includes a combination of office, R&D lab locations, field sites and manufacturing plants.
  • Moderate to heavy travel required, up to 50%.  
  • Requires a flexible schedule.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering or related field. Master's or Ph.D. preferred.
