Job Purpose


To lead product and process development action teams in various locations throughout L-P’s manufacturing facilities, accelerating the implementation and commercialization of various technologies which include process control, product development, cost reduction, quality improvement and optimization of raw materials.

Key Responsibilities


  • Plan and manage the implementation of new products and product enhancements that impact the business.
  • Organize and lead trial action teams; provide support to existing project leaders on the implementation of product and process development, cost reduction, quality improvement and raw material optimization.
  • Proactively scan and research new concepts, materials, technical opportunities and partnerships.
  • Identify and prioritize current and future R&D opportunities in new products, new processes, quality enhancements, cost reduction, product line extensions and productivity.
  • Develop and manage implementation strategies that minimize redundancy and maximize efficiency across all manufacturing units, including on-site technical resources.
  • Implement, manage and utilize the Growth & Innovation Stage Gate Process. 
  • Communicate status of development activities to appropriate parties. Implement best practice.
  • Support manufacturing, marketing and sales at product or technology commercialization phase.
  • Participate in the selection and evaluation of new equipment for existing facilities.
  • Participate as a member of project management teams for the startup of new facilities.
  • Provide technical assistance to Regional and Plant Quality Managers as needed.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.



Knowledge, Skills and abilities:


  • Knowledge of effective project management methods.
  • Knowledge of the building products industry, residential and light commercial construction methods, equipment and processes.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate products, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and develop conclusions and recommendations from that information.
  • Ability to summarize, document, and communicate R&D activities for the business.
  • Skill in identifying, developing, and delivering technical training.
  • Skill in project management
  • Ability to lead and direct work teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to operate a computer and supporting software.




  • Bachelor’s degree in Wood Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Engineering required, advanced degree preferred.
  • Technical Certifications, Project Management Certification, Lean Six Sigma Training, or other applicable training desirable.




  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in research, manufacturing, or quality assurance.
  • Experience in the application of stage gate processes for new product development.
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position.

Work Environment


  • Environment includes a combination of office environment, research facilities, and manufacturing plant environments.
  • Moderate to heavy travel required.
  • Requires a flexible schedule.
