Job Description: 

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the selected candidate will be responsible for weighing log trucks, compiling log inventory, measuring cube scale samples and enforcing company/provincial log specifications. The successful candidate may work as part of the Swan Valley Forest Resource Team when the scale is closed for the season.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Perform all duties in compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Ensure accurate weighing of log trucks as they arrive and as they leave.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial and company rules and regulations in the log yard
  • Measurement of cube samples
  • Inspect incoming logs to ensure compliance with LP log quality standards; coordinate with Forest Resources Division when standards are not met
  • Coordinate work with off-loaders and truck drivers to ensure accurate inventory records are maintained
  • Prepare daily and weekly reports
  •  Maintain log yard in an organized manner to ensure optimum inventory capacity
  •  Operate assigned equipment as needed to maintain the log yard
  •  General cleaning and maintenance of scale, scale house and log yard
  •  Perform other duties as necessary

What do I need to be successful?

  •  Knowledge of LP log requirements, forest management and wood fiber supply
  •  Knowledge of log scaling standards, government regulations, and provincial forestry utilization standards
  •  Strong math skills and computer literacy
  •  Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations
  •  Effective verbal and written communication skills
  •  Able to work independently or in a group
  •  Ability to operate small and heavy equipment as needed
  •  Ability to operate a computer and supporting software

Education

  • Possess or be able to attain Manitoba Scaler's license
  •  Current valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalency required
  •  Post secondary education in Environmental or Natural Resources Management would be considered an asset.

Work Environment

  • Scale House, Log Yard and/or outdoor environment

Experience

  • Experience with forest industry, log scaling, work in an industrial environment, trucking or related fields.
  • Knowledge of scaling and heavy equipment.
