Job Purpose

Provide leadership and direction for multiple building system R&D projects for LP Building Solutions.  This position will manage all activity and have direct accountability for LP’s Innovation Center located in Duluth, MN.  The position will support all Growth and Innovation initiatives that require Structural Engineering expertise.  A strong background in residential and light commercial construction practices, along with construction project management is desired.  In addition, this position will support a variety of new product development tasks including, technical literature development, technical support, codes and standards development, and engineering design calculations. Responsible for assessing and managing risk relating to applications engineering.  Supervise Innovation R&D staff.  Position has significant opportunities for advancement.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide leadership regarding the development of major product application projects including technical literature, engineering design, product development, codes and standards development and technical support.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing new building systems based on sound engineering principles, and in accordance with industry codes and standards, LP policy and governing laws.
  • Responsible for assessing, managing and communicating risk associated with building systems, literature and market guidance.
  • Responsible for developing product engineering design values.
  • Responsible for project management of cross functional teams in multiple development projects
  • Develop project scopes, budgets and schedules and manage performance against approved versions.
  • Lead technical aspects of Growth and Innovation stage-gate process.
  • Conduct training for personnel in areas of Project Management, Engineering and Leadership.
  • Responsible for representing LP on industry committee’s that develop codes and standards.
  • Supervise and manage assigned staff; recruit, train, coach, and evaluate performance if applicable.
  • Responsible for creating technical drawings and tables for end user brochures.
  • Responsible for establishing and validating calculations used in building systems
  • Responsible for creating details and tables for new building system and product applications
  • Responsible for advancing new technologies to enable new product development.
  • Responsible for gaining building code acceptance of LP products
  • Assume responsibility for personal safety and for the safety performance of all personnel, projects, and programs managed.
  • Maintain Engineering records according to engineering procedures and corporate Records Retention Guidelines
  • Perform other duties as necessary

What do I need to be successful?

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a practicing professional in engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering engineering projects through successful completion.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles used in designing and developing structural framing members.   Preferably Wood Structural Engineering.
  •  Knowledge of residential and commercial building codes and practices. Working knowledge of computer applications including; word processing, financial management systems and project scheduling software (MS Word Excel & Project)
  • Knowledge of structural analysis software and industry design software, BIM software preferred.
  • Ability to integrate multiple complex factors to make sound engineering decisions.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory and management skills
  • Knowledge of building products industry
  • The ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to a variety of complex business problems
  • The ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • The ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs
  • The ability to lead and or function on multi-disciplinary teams
  • The ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • A knowledge of contemporary engineering and business practices
  • The ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
  • Ability to implement professional Project Management practices, programs and tools
  • Excellent communication skills, phone skills and problem solving skills.  Goes the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and able to understand and carry out business objectives with little or no supervision.

Education

  • BS in Engineering, Applied Science, or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred 

Work Environment

  • Application lab environment and office.
  • Moderate travel; flexible schedule required
