Job Purpose

In cooperation with the Technology Team, responsible for leading all building science focused initiatives, including the development of design values, installation instructions, building enclosure best practices, and product warranties. Provide technical oversight and leadership for multiple product and process development projects for LP Building Solutions including: building enclosure design review, evaluation, and testing of construction assemblies, technical literature development, technical product and system design support, field evaluation of construction processes and practices, building codes and product/system performance standards development, and ongoing building science research. 

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the development and review of new products and building solutions, from the initial idea to commercialization.
  • Plan and manage the development of technical documentation, product literature, and performance standards in accordance with design requirements, building codes, and acceptance criteria.
  • Identify and prioritize research on building materials and methods for product solutions for the residential & commercial construction market.
  • Communicate status of all building science and codes/standards development activities to key stakeholders.
  • Develop product engineering & performance design values.
  • Oversee the review and analysis of various draft or proposed assemblies.
  • Develop justification and performance data to support technical literature and product warranties.
  • Support and lead project management of cross functional teams in multiple development projects
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions for technical, engineering, sales, and other personnel in areas of building science, construction assembly best practices, and building codes & standards.
  • Represent LP on technical and industry committees that develop codes and standards.
  • Create technical drawings and tables for technical literature, and construction assembly details for new product solutions and applications.
  • Provide customer technical support. Determine root cause and recommend actions to eliminate top complaints.
  • Plan and manage benchmarking and other competitive research activities; analyze and communicate results.
  • Develop product design and testing strategies which facilitate building code acceptance of LP products.
  • Assume responsibility for personal safety and for the safety performance of all personnel, projects, and programs.
  • Maintain records according to technology team procedures and corporate records retention guidelines.

What do I need to be successful?

  • 10+ years previous related experience
  • Field experience in residential and commercial construction
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to acquire within one year.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles used in designing and developing structural framing members, preferably engineered wood products and wood-based structural panels
  • Thorough knowledge of residential and commercial building codes and practices
  • Experience in leading a team of engineering resources in exploring, designing, and implementing building solutions for residential and light commercial construction.
  • Working knowledge of business applications including; word processing, financial management systems. and project scheduling software (MS Word, Excel, & Project)
  • Experience using structural analysis software and/or construction/architectural design software
  • Thorough technical knowledge of building enclosure design and construction principles
  • Demonstrated technical depth in understanding and applying building science principles
  • Familiarity with drawings and specifications
  • Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to a variety of complex business problems
  • Experience in designing systems, components, and processes to meet desired needs
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams
  • The ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems
  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
  • A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • A knowledge of contemporary engineering and business practices
  • Ability to implement professional Project Management practices, programs and tools
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and able to understand and carry out business objectives with little or no supervision.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required in civil or structural engineering, building or architectural science, or mechanical engineering from an accredited university, master’s preferred

Work Environment

  • This position will be remote, working in a home office environment
