Job Purpose

To provide leadership in the OSB business to support capacity growth and production through strategic plant maintenance and reliability programs. The person in this role will lead the development and execution of strategies to achieve manufacturing excellence through plant reliability programs. Partner collaboratively with site corporate functions and plant Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and other key stakeholders to align business and division strategic reliability goals. Advocate, foster, and champion a results-driven maintenance reliability culture that focuses on proactive maintenance and continuous improvement at LP.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide leadership, vision, teamwork, and communication to execute key OSB Maintenance and Reliability strategies.
  • Lead, develop, directed, and drive operational and maintenance strategies for assets utilized in OSB manufacturing Mills that will permanently reduce unplanned downtime and increase OEE.
  • Develop Reliability strategies for assets utilized in converting logs into strands and then into the finished product. 
  • In collaboration with the site’s Reliability Engineers and Maintenance Superintendents, develop and implement best practices that can be applied across the network for long-term sustained low unscheduled downtime (UDT).
  • Leverage the best operational and maintenance practices from site to site, as well as manufacturer upgrades and modifications that will increase reliability.
  • Through criticality assessments (A, B, C) and failure history, work to identify critical spare parts required based on business impact.  
  • Become the corporate subject matter expert on maintenance and reliability processes and equipment, utilizing learned skills to assist in training and coaching the operations and maintenance teams on the most efficient practices, methods, and procedures, including but not limited to TPM methodology.
  • Support the engineering group on rebuilds and modifications of key assets.
  • Develop the best operational and maintenance strategies for a large array of assets from the “green end” to finishing.
  • Drive strategies utilizing a sense of prioritization that will lead to spare parts definition and appropriate strategy to maintain.
  • Establish long-term goals per Mill to achieve world-class levels of performance when it comes to unscheduled downtime (UDT).
  • Develop strategies to aid in improving equipment efficiency, a key component to overall OEE performance.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, OEMs, and external resources to deliver training and optimal asset management strategies.
  • Develop processes that facilitate maintaining and tracking critical spare parts that might be shared between sites.
  • Teach, coach, mentor, and support best maintenance & operational practices across sites. Leverage internal knowledge.
  • Identify areas of energy mass balance opportunities and work with sites to develop strategic plans for energy savings.
  • Support capital projects and engineering in the design, installation, and start-up of green end, drying & energy systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to ensure maintenance and reliability principles are followed in designing/buying new equipment.
  • Study and establish appropriate levels of maintenance cost to keep equipment reliable and at high OEE levels.
  • Support risk management activities such as thermal oil audits and thermal oil asset strategies.
  • Review site thermal oil test results and work with sites on plans to maintain oil within acceptable limits.
  • Review and assist in establishing a sound process for root cause failure analysis, establishing triggers, and ensuring high levels of quality in the execution of this key tool as well as promoting exchange of best practices across Mills.
  • Assume responsibility for personal compliance with all safety requirements and include safe practices in all implemented processes.
  • Develop and conduct assessments and provide comprehensive reports on the gaps in desired performance levels versus actual.
  • Support the maintenance and reliability budgeting process for all the Mills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What do I need to be successful?

  • Experience in implementing a sound Maintenance & Reliability process at one or more sites.
  • Experienced and trained in Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and/or Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Knowledge and experience implementing TPM, along with Lean Manufacturing knowledge.
  • Proven team leadership and project management skills; ability to influence change.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills: ability to effectively manage multiple demanding priorities.
  • Ability to transfer knowledge to local hourly and management teams through teaching, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Experience and knowledge of OSB panels manufacturing equipment is a plus.
  • Experience and familiarity with operational control systems and HMI screens, along with the ability to use trending tools and review alarm/event history.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office and applicable software applications.
  • 12+ years of experience in Engineering, Reliability, and/or Maintenance within the wood products manufacturing industry or similar industries.
  • The ideal candidate will have significant operations leadership experience at the plant or regional level.
  • History of progressive responsibilities dealing with large organizations (multi-location, multi-function) experiencing complex and rapid changes.
  • Strong track record of successfully leading capital project planning and execution and operational maintenance improvement.
  • Proven/demonstrated ability to provide leadership and clarity to personnel and organizations both internally and externally. Experience in leading teams is desired.
  • Progressive responsibilities dealing with large organizations (multi-location, multi-function), experiencing complex and rapid changes.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electric engineering or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in the field.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification preferred.

Work Environment

  • This position works in both an office environment and a manufacturing environment. (i.e., climbing ladders and stairs, working in hot and dusty environments for up to 10 hours, and occasionally carrying or lifting up to 40 lbs.).
  • This position is remote and requires a flexible schedule with overnight travel of approximately 50% depending on the needs of the business.
